Makoto Kubota recorded the strongest street performance of the 2010s in Koenji and Tokushima Awa Odori.
Two super groove tracks released on vinyl for the first time
In the summer of 2010, "Zomeki Ichi" was released, featuring a recording of the Koenji Awa Odori dance in Tokyo by Makoto Kubota.
It was a huge hit, receiving a great response not only from die-hard Awa Odori fans, but also from world music fans and club music fans.
The "Zomeki" series has released eight CDs so far.
This work is a spin-off of the "Zomeki" series, and the first to be released on vinyl as a 12-inch single.
On the A-side is Mossaku, who has been influencing the new generation of Awa Odori dancers for over half a century since his explosive debut in 1968 as a leading figure in the one-beat genre.
A performance in Koenji during the time when Koji Tani was the leader of the gong troupe.
The performance was flashy yet stoic, showing the dignity of a champion who could not be rivaled. The echoes of the town and the reactions of the enthusiastic audience were also recorded with a roaring sound.
Next on side B is a rare live recording of a joint session between Shinmachibashi Yoiyoi Hayashi, led by Yanagimachi Harusame, who passed away last year, and Mayuzuki Ren, known for their unique groove.
For half a century, the yoi bayashi music has been drawing patrons into a whirlwind of dancing, not in the box seats but in the plaza, in an atmosphere reminiscent of a Jamaican dance hall.
On the other hand, Mayuzuki Ren's groove boasts the deepest feel, with a dynamic energy and incredible precision reminiscent of Earl Palmer, the founder of rock drumming.
It was recorded in the 2010s by Makoto Kubota using a ROLAND R4 recording device, a handheld microphone, and a SONY ECM 999.
It's a moving recording of a marching group, so you can enjoy the fascinating changes in balance over time.
The retro cover photo is a 2024 work by Hiroyoshi Taira, an up-and-coming photographer who will be holding a photo exhibition titled "Zomeki" at Shinjuku Olympus Gallery in March of this year.
